Update: Current read, Star Wars readathon, TBR and Upcoming Posts

Does anyone else feel like January is just flying by? I have a deadline at the end of the month, so please, take your time January, there’s no rush 😂

Current Read: ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ by J.K. Rowling (illust. Jim Kay)

When a letter arrives for the unhappy but ordinary Harry Potter, a decade-old secret is finally revealed to him. Harry’s parents were wizards, killed by a Dark Lord’s curse when Harry was just a baby, and which he mysteriously survived.

At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry stumbles upon a sinister mystery when he finds a three-headed dog guarding a room on the third floor. Then he hears of a missing stone with astonishing powers, which could be valuable, dangerous…or both. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

A full-colour edition featuring the illustrations of Jim Kay, winner of the Kate Greenaway medal.

Current thoughts (74/248): I’m really enjoying it so far – not that I really expected otherwise! I will say that it’s not as perfect as I remembered it (under the golden glaze of childhood adoration), with tiny inconsistencies, occasionally odd sentence structure and things that confuse me slightly. Such as Gringotts (in London) being the only wizarding bank in the entirety of the UK. Or are there branches in major cities? Is owl banking the wizarding alternative to online banking? Anyway this is more thinking than is necessary – and just opens up a whole other bunch of questions about other wizarding schools, transport to Hogwarts, etc. etc.

A Readathon in a Galaxy Far, Far Away (hosted by @_hex_libris on Instagram)

Mid-way through January I stumbled across these ‘Star Wars’ themed readathons (do tell me your thoughts on the new movie – I have OPINIONS) and I’m doing a mix of the Jedi and Sith prompts. Grey Jedi all the way! (So far I’m looking like more of a Sith though, lol)

The Jedi books I have planned are:

  • ‘I am one with the Force, the Force is with me’ (A crying book): ‘Solitaire’ by Alice Oseman
  • ‘Wookie Warrior’ (a book with non-humans): ‘Pax’ by Sara Pennypacker ✔️
  • ‘Ancient Jedi Texts’ (occult/hidden history): ‘The Lie Tree’ by Frances Hardinge/’Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ by J.K. Rowling
  • ‘Scruffy nerf herder’ (a book with witty dialogue): ‘Fangirl’ by Rainbow Rowell/’The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue’ by Mackenzie Lee
  • ‘Millenium Falcon’ (sci-fi/fabulation/fact): ‘The Kingdom’ by Jess Rothenburg/’Aurora Rising’ by Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman

The Sith books I have planned are:

  • ‘Nightsisters’ (female author): ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ by J.K. Rowling
  • ‘Sith holocrons’ (short story collection): ‘White as Milk, Red as Blood’ by von Schönworth, Tanaka & Dawson ✔️
  • ‘Rule of Two’ (second book in series): ‘Girls of Storm and Shadow’ by Natasha Ngan/’The Raven King’ by Nora Sakavic
  • ‘Obi-Wan has taught you well’ (new blood character): ‘The Tyrant’s Tomb’ by Rick Riordan ✔️
  • ‘Have you heard the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?’ (unlikeable and/or villainous MC): ‘Perfume’ by Patrick Süskind/’Dracula’ by Bram Stoker

Upcoming Posts:

  • Review: ‘White as Milk, Red as Blood’ by von Schönworth, Tanaka & Dawson
  • Thursday Tunes: ‘The School for Good and Evil’

Hope everyone has a great week! ¡Hasta luego! 📚

I read it at the beginning and I’m absolutely obsessed with the artwork. I hope you love it too 🖤 And oh my gosh, I didn’t know there was a Star Wars themed readathon. That’s AMAZING.
