If you haven’t yet heard of it, the O.W.L.s Magical Readathon is an annual Harry-Potter inspired readathon hosted by G @ Book Roast, where you ‘sit’ your O.W.L. exams in April by reading books fitting the prompts for each wizarding subject! You can choose from an array of wizarding careers which have specific grade requirements when you get to N.E.W.Ts level (a readathon in August, I believe).
(Check out G’s introductory video here – you’ll find all the links you need in her description box.)
Career: Hogwarts Professor (Muggle Studies)

TBR: Subjects
Compulsory subjects for Professor track
- Muggle Studies (perspective of a Muggle – contemporary novel): ‘What We Deserve’ by Alyssa Nohar OR ‘Solitaire’ by Alice Oseman OR ‘Radio Silence’ (also) by Alice Oseman OR ‘Fangirl’ by Rainbow Rowell
- Defence Against the Dark Arts (Grindylows – set at sea/coast): ‘The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue’ by Mackenzie Lee OR ‘History Is All You Left Me’ by Adam Silvera
- Transfiguration (Animagus lecture – includes shapeshifting): ‘North Child’ by Edith Pattou OR ‘Barefoot on the Wind’ by Zoë Marriott
- Charms (Lumos Maxima – white cover): ‘Kingdom of Ash’ by S.J. Maas
- Herbology (Mimbulus mimbletonia – title starts with M): ‘More Happy Than Not’ by Adam Silvera
- Ancient Runes (heart rune – heart on cover/in title): ‘The Hand, the Eye and the Heart’ by Zoë Marriott
- Care of Magical Creatures (Hippogriff – beaked creature on cover): ‘The Raven King’ by Nora Sakavic
Optional modules
- Arithmancy (magical qualities of number 2 – balance/opposites – read something outside of your favourite genre): ‘The Golden Days: a Carry On/Wayward Son zine’ – this is a fan-made zine brimming with fanfiction and fanart, created to raise money for the charity Outright Action International! Given how I hardly ever read fanfic, and that I’m 200% reading this zine in April, I decided to include ‘Golden Days’ for this prompt!
- Potions (Shrinking Solution – book under 150 pages): ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’ by Charles Mackesy
- History of Magic (witch hunts – book ft. witches/wizards): ‘The Crown of Croswald’ by D.E. Night
- Astronomy (night classes – read majority of this book when it’s dark outside): ‘Burn’ by Patrick Ness (eARC)
Seminars and Training
- Merpeople Linguistics (O.W.L.s requirement: Herbology)
- Legal Defence of Fantastic Beasts (O.W.L.s requirements: Care of Magical Creatures and History of Magic)
(Side note: I’ve literally only just realised that the O/EE/A grades for each subject are actually for the N.E.W.T.s readathon in August! So for O.W.L.s you only have to read one book per subject. Guess my required reading just shrunk for this month… 😂)
I’m most excited to read ‘Burn’ and ‘The Golden Days’ fanzine!
Thanks for reading! Are you doing the O.W.L.s 2020 readathon? Which read are you most excited for?
