Fanart Friday: A Butter MerMay

#FanartFriday is where I share some of my own fanart (or just art) and/or shout-out some awesome pieces that I’ve spotted recently! Feel free to link/share your own in the comments!

5 weeks on from BTS ‘Butter’ – and I still love it just as much! Are you still listening to it? 🧈

I hadn’t planned to do any BTS-themed MerMay stuff (only stuff for Barbie’s ‘Fairytopia’ and IU’s ‘Celebrity’ – which I’ll share next week!) but I was so into ‘Butter’ that I was immediately inspired to do a painting for it.

[ID: a purple-tailed, pink-haired, brown-skinned merperson sitting on a beach with an Asian person with brown hair in a ponytail, ARMY bomb earrings, blue polo shirt and denim shorts. They are watching the BTS ‘Butter’ music video on a laptop.]

This painting was really hard – I’ve always been more used to drawing than painting, so there were so many things I kept getting stuck on!

  • mermaid tail and fins…deceptively challenging
  • why is painting a naked back so difficult??
  • I definitely still need to work on clothing folds…
  • the ears. A mystery to me.
  • skin and hair still confuse me each time I paint them…
  • why did I pick tricky poses?!

The background was Confusion Vol. 2:

  • cliffs/rocks/sand… *jabs repeatedly at the tablet screen with a gouache brush and hopes for the best *
  • how do I paint waves??! *repeats step above*

Several times, I remember thinking, “oh god, what’s the point of this, maybe I’ll just stop now”, but then ‘Butter’ would start playing again and I’d feel more motivated πŸ˜‚πŸŒ»

Thanks for reading! What do you think of this? Do you like mermaids in film/shows/books/art? Any recommendations? And what are the songs you’ve been loving lately? Let me know any thoughts below!
